Biosecurity & Bit Care
Protecting Horses Through Every Rental
At EquiBit Exchange, protecting the health of your horse is at the heart of everything we do. Every bit returned to our inventory undergoes a thorough cleaning, inspection, disinfection, and quality verification process before it is approved for another horse.
Our protocol is developed using veterinary biosecurity principles and industry-standard cleaning and disinfection practices to help reduce the risk of disease transmission while preserving the quality and performance of every bit we rent.
Our Cleaning & Disinfection Process
Thorough Inspection
Every returned bit is individually inspected before cleaning begins. We examine each bit for:
- Organic debris, saliva, feed residue, and dirt
- Rust or corrosion
- Cracks, sharp edges, or excessive wear
- Loose joints or damaged components
Any bit that does not meet our quality standards is immediately removed from service.
Deep Cleaning
Each bit is thoroughly cleaned using warm water, a mild detergent, and soft brushes designed to remove visible organic material without damaging the finish.
Special attention is given to joints, ports, rollers, rings, and other areas where debris can collect.
Removing organic material is a critical first step because disinfectants perform most effectively on clean surfaces.
Professional Disinfection
Once cleaned, every bit is completely immersed in Rescue™ Accelerated Hydrogen Peroxide disinfectant for the manufacturer's recommended contact time.
Rescue™ is an EPA-registered disinfectant widely used in veterinary hospitals, animal shelters, and equine facilities. It is effective against a broad spectrum of bacteria, fungi, and viruses while remaining compatible with stainless steel, titanium, and many other materials commonly used in horse bits.
Rinsing & Drying
After disinfection, every bit is thoroughly rinsed with clean water to remove disinfectant residue.
Each bit is then completely dried before moving to the final quality inspection.
Final Quality Verification
Before a bit is approved for rental, it undergoes one final inspection to verify that it is:
- Clean
- Properly disinfected
- Free from visible defects
- Fully functional
- Completely dry
- Ready for use
Every processed bit is documented as part of our quality assurance program.
Clean Storage
Once approved, each bit is stored in a clean, dry environment to help protect it from contamination before shipment.
Only bits that have successfully completed our cleaning, disinfection, inspection, and verification process are made available for rental.
Why Biosecurity Matters
Horse bits come into direct contact with a horse's mouth and may be exposed to saliva, feed residue, and other organic material during use. Without proper cleaning and disinfection, shared equipment has the potential to contribute to the transmission of certain infectious organisms between horses.
Our comprehensive biosecurity protocol is designed to help reduce that risk through careful cleaning, professional disinfection, routine inspection, and controlled storage.
While no cleaning and disinfection process can guarantee the complete elimination of every pathogen under every circumstance, our procedures are based on recognized veterinary biosecurity principles and are intended to provide a high standard of care for every rental.
Our Commitment to You
When you choose EquiBit Exchange, you're choosing more than a horse bit—you’re choosing a company committed to horse health, rider confidence, and exceptional equipment care.
Every rental bit is handled with the same attention to detail we would expect for our own horses.
